Ship A Hoy! Advice if you are preparing for a boat launch

Boat launch - On deck!

Across the UK, boat moorings begin again from the 1st April 2025. If you are a boat owner and starting to dream of leisurely day trips out on the water and in the sunshine, then it is important that you are fully prepared for the summer months ahead.

Ensuring that your boat is safe to use, and that your annual mooring and liability insurance is booked are essential tasks in preparation for launch.

Boat Launch Checklist

  1. Clean and Service – Prior to launch it is important that your boat is cleaned and serviced, so that any ‘wear and tear’ can be fixed. Check the quality of ropes and replace if necessary. Servicing the engine by a qualified engineer, will ensure that the boat is safe to use and that the engine runs smoothly when operating. The hull should be thoroughly inspected and all components cleaned and well-maintained.
  2. Check Safety Equipment – It is paramount that all boat safety equipment is in good working condition. Should you find yourself in difficulty whilst out on the water, your safety equipment cannot only bide you time until the coastguard reaches you, but it can also save your life. As a minimum, make sure that you have stored onboard, lifejackets, a flare, a whistle and a radio.
  3. Embracing the Technology – Smartphone apps provide vital sources of information. Take time to set up phone apps for weather, tides, and ‘What3Words’ – which can pinpoint your location position, even when you’re out on the water.
  4. Register for Mooring – Generally mooring is renewed annually and costs can vary greatly. The cost of mooring will depend on the size of the boat and the facilities you would like to use. The choice of a marina launch or a slipway, trailer storage and cleaning facilities, plus parking convenience and on-site facilities, all impact on annual fees.
  5. Renew your insurance – To moor a boat, owners need to have Marine Insurance in place. The liability cover protects against damage to the boat itself or injuries caused to others.
